Overview

AOL instant messenger or AIM launched in 1996 gave AOL members the chance to use person to person messaging, chatroom messaging, and the ability to share files. You create a screenname ex. (blondiebear27) and when you are online, you are open to chat and communicate with other members who are online at the same time. You had the ability to create an AIM status (away, online, offline) and add other personal information. There was debate over the privacy settings concerning aim. You could add a person to your "buddy list" without them knowing, and have the ability to see their status and if they were online or offline. And even if you blocked a screenname, they could create another one and still harass you. And Aim is also know for security weakness, and has lost the huge following it had a few years ago with the rise of facebook messaging, and other messaging systems.
